About The Bugout Bag

A friend asked why I wasn’t writing more about equipment–after all, the title of the blog implies dehydrated food and tents and sleeping bags and guns and knives and….well, stuff.

I have friends whose idea of a luxurious bugout bag consists of a knife and a blanket. Other friends won’t venture past the edge of the asphalt without a fully self-contained RV with 6 months supply of everything on board.

It seems to me that the most important aspect of your bugout bag is between your ears. Knowledge is more important than gear, and the right information can be more valuable than a year’s supply of high-priced dehydrated meals.

You’ll see reviews and recommendations–I’m just as tempted by gadgets as the next guy! But you’ll find more information about how to survive without so many of the trappings of civilization.

You’ll also see several different levels of survival being discussed. Urban Survival is very different from Wilderness Survival–knowing wild edible plants won’t do you much good if you’re stranded in downtown post-Katrina New Orleans. Preparing for a natural (or man-made) disaster can be much different from preparing for an unplanned survival experience in the Andes.

Yet each of these topics have a common ground–mental preparation. What’s going on in your head can help you survive, or it can kill you.

Anyway, there it is. Sometimes this blog will make sense. Other times, you’ll wonder if I got my mushrooms mixed up.

Enjoy it!
